As a makeup artist, I am regularly buying and trying a cadre of beauty products. Some are mainstay, go-to brands and others are under-the-radar finds most gals have yet to discover. When you find beauty treasures, you love them all – ranging from niche brands to pricy pro products that generate great water cooler and social media buzz. So to prep you for hot summer dates and days, here are some of my latest discoveries with suggestions on where to make your pennies stretch and where to just plop down a piece of the paycheck.
- Chubby Lip Pencils – SAVE
With summer pool parties and beach BBQs in full swing, no gal wants to be bothered with a complicated lip liner, lipstick and gloss routine? Grab a chubby pencil for quick and fabulous lips. While I adore pricey chubby’s by Clinque and Urban Decay, my favorites are Revlon’s ColorBurst Lacquer Balm. For around $7, in either matte or glossy, these chunky pencils are a girl’s best friend. My favorite shades are: Demure (a sheer nude) and Showy (a clear pink).
MISTER MAKEUP TIP: For a quick summer makeup, add a dash of your chubby to your eyelids and cheeks for instant glowing skin and style.
- Facial Sunsceen – SPLURGE
Sunscreen is a beauty essential 365 days a year, but the often thick and goopy stuff can prove troublesome in hot and humid summers. To the rescue, is Dermalogica’s Oil-Free Matte SPF 30. For shiny skinned gals, this product is a lifesaver – it keeps your skin matte and shine free for hours. Amazing. Yes, it’s $49, but well worth the splurge.
MISTER MAKEUP TIP: Add a drop of foundation into your sunscreen for an instant tinted moisturizer.
- Blot Papers – SAVE
Shiny skin is inevitable in sticky temperatures. A dab of powder mid-day is fine, but continually adding powder on oily skin can lead to a cake face. I love to use blot papers on models to combat shine and refresh makeup. My favorites are the pricey Shiseido Blotting Papers, but I discovered a fabulous dupe in e.l.f. Professional Shine Eraser Blotting Sheets for only $1. Buy two or three and keep one in every purse.
MISTER MAKEUP TIP: Use blot papers to blot lipstick or soften a too heavy handed blush or shadow application.
4 Mascara – SAVE
There is no reason to spend big bucks on mascara. I know, I’m mascara obsessed; and I’ve tried every brand on the planet. I adore Tom Ford Extreme Mascara as well as perennial favorite Dior Diorshow , but Covergirl’s Clump Crusher around $7 is equally as good. This green tubed wonder creates long lush lashes and t doesn’t flake or smear – even after a quick dip in the pool – and it never ever clumps.
MISTER MAKEUP TIP: Never pump your mascara tube – it puts air in the tube and dries out your formula much sooner.
- Eyeliner – SPLURGE
Nothing pops an eye more than a quick flick of eyeliner. Pair a red lip with a dash of liner and you will be the belle of the ball at any summer party. Sadly, most drugstore liquid liners tend to smudge, flake or melt away after a few hours of humidity. Try Kat Von D’s Tattoo Liner perfect results from dawn to dusk. A splurge at $19, but this unique pen-like liner offers thick or thin razor sharp lines that go on evenly and don’t budge.
MISTER MAKEUP TIP: Store your liquid liner pen point down to keep it from drying out too fast.
That, my darlings, is a Save or Splurge wrap!
