Biker Chic Makeup Tips and Tricks
by Mister Makeup,
It’s time to rev up those engines girls, because the word on the street is biker chic. From zippered leggings, to leather jackets to motorcycle boots, fall 2009 is taking a spin on the wild side. And with a new look brings new makeup – and Mister Makeup is hopping on his hog and delivering the do’s an don’ts of biker chic.
Nothing – and I mean nothing – goes better with a Dolce and Gabanna leather mini or zippered thigh-high Louis Vuitton boots than a smoky eye. Mister Makeup cannot tell you how many emails he gets demanding the perfect smoky eye technique. Well, this month, I’m giving away my secrets.
I start a smoky eye on a clean moisturized face (try Patricia Wexler MD’s various serums www.bathandbodyworks.com) – this way, if you make a mess with your shadows it won’t ruin your foundation and concealer. PS – I am in love with Dex Modern Minerals Pressed Foundation (www.dexnewyork.com) – just smooth it on after you perfect your smoky eye for undetectable sheer coverage.
Now let’s make some smoke – first, take a thick black pencil (try Benefit Cosmetics Bad Girl Eyeliner at www.sephora.com) and draw a thick line around your entire lash line – top and bottom. Using a Q-tip, smudge a dark colored – try blue, purple or burgundy - eyeshadow ( I love Pur Minerals (www.purminerals.com) in Burgundy Malachite) into the liner until it’s well blended. Next, take a light shimmery shadow with a fluffy shadow brush (try Urban Decay Metalic Glitter Eyeshadow in Mildow at www.urbandecay.com) and lightly apply over the dark shadow and up into the crease – be sure to apply a smidge to your inner eyes for extra highlight.
Finally, curl your lashes (Try ELF’s eyelash curler at www.eyeslipsface.com) and apply an inky black mascara ( I love Rimmel’s new Glam Eyes Last Flirt Mascara in Kohl Black at www.walgreens.com). For extra fun, go to www.rimmellondon.com and try out their nifty virtual makeover tools.
Voila! – the perfect smoky eye.
Normally, I think a smoky eye looks best with a nude lip – well, not this month! Motorcyle Mamas are paring dark eyes with ruby red lips like “Year One” star Juno Temple’s to the left – and even black lips. I am in love with Chanel’s Le Rouge Satine 147 Maniac – a deep plum black – and Hysteria 157 – a blue violet black. For red lips, try Lipstick Queen’s Red Sinner (www.lipstickqueen.com) or Rouge Sinner – both with silky matte finishes.
To make your dark lip color last, I always add a touch of colorless loose powder (try Make Up For Ever’s HD Microfinish Powder at www.sephora.com) over the lipstick and around the edges – I swear the color won’t budge.
Nails, too, are taking a spin on the back of a bike – and are also a great way to get a touch of the biker chic without going full force to Harley heaven. Superstar manicurist Deborah Lippmann says nails are going longer this season – all the better to show off dark colors. I love deep metallic shades this season – try Deborah Lippmann’s (www.lippmanncollection.com) 10th Anniversary Set that includes Funky Chunky – a sequined sheer black – and Ruby Red Slippers – a bright fabulous red.
If you’re looking for purple or green nails (all the rage on the runways), take a look at the Baby It’s Cold Outside collection by Jessica - www.jessicacosmetics.com. I love Midnight Mist and Divine Pine. If your nails are on the shorter side, try pushing back your cuticles to make your nails look longer.
Once your makeup and nails are toughened up, it’s time to add a little sass to your hair. No matter what the cut or length or style, the perfect coiffure for biker chic is sexy, tousled and big. Most hairstylists recommend day old hair to achieve this look. If your hair is too clean, try Jonathan Dirt Texturizing Paste (www.sephora.com) – this amazing gritty cream adds bulk to lifeless hair and gives it that bedhead look in seconds – try a messy French twist or big curls. My stylist buddies also add Dirt to short styles to give it that piecy spiky look. Don’t forget to spray your ‘do – try Phillip B Jet Set Hairspray (www.phillipb.com) to solidify your biker style.
So girls, don’t be afraid to look tough this season – it’s all in the name of fashion.
