Hot child in the city – and it isn’t easy looking pretty!!

The summer heat is in full force and fashionistas from coast to coast are doing everything they can to stay cool. This month, Mister Makeup is lending a helping hand by offering up a bevy of summer essentials to keep you looking your freshest even when the temperatures are near the boiling point.

For inspiration, take a look at a photo from Sherri Jesse – a student at my makeup class (www.davidmaderich.com/classes). It was almost 100 degrees outside, but Miss Sherri made model Kara coo with coolness.

Let’ start things out with an email I received from a frazzled reader:

Q: “Mister Makeup, I spend 20 minutes putting on my face, but by the time I get to work it looks like I ran a triathlon….Can you help?!?!”

MM: Well, my dear, when humidity rears its ugly head, I say no, no and double no to foundation. I mean, nothing says meltdown more in the summer heat than a greasy mess of colored gook on your face. My secret: a thick concealer (try Covergirl Simply Ageless Concealer at www.drugstore.com) layered on with a brush (try billy b’s concealer brush at www.billybeauty.com). Apply to areas that need coverage – under eyes, zits etc.. Set with a sheer dose of powder (try It Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Micro Powder at www.itcosmetics.com) and your face should last throughout the day. For touch-ups, leave the compact at home and use blotting papers (I love Boscia Blotting Linens at www.sephora.com) – and remember to blot – never rub.

If you feel the need to refresh, try giving your mug a quick spray of Jurlique Citrus Purifying Mist. I swear this is heaven in a bottle. The package says it’s loaded with “living energy” and I believe it. Spray it on fresh skin or over your day-old makeup to revitalize it. I use it on my models around 3pm to perk-up the skin and makeup.

For quick summer color, nothing beats the beauty of bronzer. Try NYC New York Color’s Brush-on Mineral Bronzer (www.newyorkcolor.com) for easy no-mess application – this lovely swirl-up bronzer with a brush is perfect for travel or touch-ups. Where to apply bronzer? Hit the high points of the face – bridge of nose, high on the cheekbones, chin and forehead.

To obtain smear proof eyes, ditch the heavy liner or multiple shadow tricks on steamy days. I like to use one rich shadow (Josie Maran makes to-die-for single color shades – try Invigorate; a gorgeous shade of sheer green at www.josiemarancosmetics.com) on the lids and a thick coat of waterproof mascara – I adore Rimmell’s Max Volume Flash Mascara at www.amazon.com. Or try FACE atelier ‘s Cry Baby Sculpt Mascara – I swear this mascara will not come off until you wash it off with plain soap and water – find it at www.faceatelier.com.

Finally, add some non-greasy lip balm (try Burt’s Bees Rejuvenating Lip Balm with Acai Berry at www.drugstore.com) and you’re ready for work or for cocktails.

On a hot night when you don’t feel like dolling up your face, try painting your nails. Nothing says freshness faster than a beautiful manicure.
