The Return of the Lipstick

The bullet is back.

That’s right, darlings, after years of taking a backseat to lip gloss, lipstick – in all its film noir glory – is staging a comeback.

Makeup artists around the globe – including me – have been using the magic tubes of color for months now. I mean, nothing is more glamorous (like this pic of Evan Rachel Wood at the “Ides of March” premiere) than pulling out a silver tube of color and freshening up your lips.

Don’t know how to use lipstick?  Read on for the 411 on lipstick dos and don’ts.

Know Your Formula

Lipstick comes in various formulas including matte, satin, cream and sheer.

MATTE LIPSTICK is shine free with a thick opaque coverage – long lasting and perfect for elegant galas and sophisticated soirees. Inglot Cosmetics has an amazing selection of matte lipsticks.

SATIN/CREAM LIPSTICK is the perfect formula to wear everyday – it’s moisturizing with medium coverage and a slight shine. Try Chanel Rouge Allure Luminous Satin Lipcolor for great results.

SHEER LIPSTICK is a sister to lip gloss, but in a tube. Shiny with sheer coverage, this lipstick is perfect for weekends or for gals that just can’t give up the gloss. My favorite sheer lipstick is Clinque Almost Lipstick.

Lipstick is a tad more time-concerning than simply applying a swipe of gloss. First off, you must exfoliate your lips to remove dead skin that will gunk up your lipstick. Try or rub your lips with an old toothbrush and a touch of Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream.

Next, apply lipstick with a brush to create an even line – if needed, use a pencil as a guideline.  Try not to overdraw or reshape your lips or you run the risk of looking like Mommie Dearest.

Finally, apply a light dusting of translucent powder to the edges of your lips to lock in color.

Choosing the Right Color

Mister Makeup loves bright color – and this season festive hues are all the rage – from fire engine reds, bright fuchsias to intense burgundies.  For the timid, nudes are in the news, too.

I adore MUD’s (Make-up Designory) Lipstick in Lady Bug – a blue-based red that looks amazing on all skin toneshttp://shop.mudshop.com/lady-bug.   For those in the pink, try Tom Ford Beauty Lipstick in Violet Fatale – this is the perfect show topping color.

The absolute nude is Dolce & Gabanna’s Shine Lipstick in Almond. ‘Nuf said.

About the Eyes…

Japonesque Create Beauty Faux LashesRemember to keep the eyes neutral when wearing bright lip colors. To add a dash of drama that won’t compete with your lips, try a winged false eyelash on the outer corners of your eyes ala Marilyn Monroe. Try Japonesque Create Beauty Faux Lashes – Remember to always use Duo Eyelash Adhesive to secure your lash until you take it off.

That’s it for this month darling!  Bite the bullet and give lipstick a try.
